Class novel passage fluency

6-8, 9-12Oral reading fluency (WCPM)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students whose instructional-level rate is growing and who need to show that it carries into the novel the class is reading. Use when present levels show the novel is within reach (about 90% accuracy or higher); otherwise keep to instructional-level text.

Baseline
Pick three passages without heavy dialogue or unusual names and take the median. Note names and invented words that slow the student, and preteach them if they repeat through the book.
Tips
Ties fluency work to class literature, which makes practice feel relevant to older students. Novel passages vary; note the chapter. Use an audio version of the book for access while this goal is worked on.
Limits
Passages within one novel differ in difficulty, so data will be noisier than with a leveled probe set. When the class changes books, scores may shift.

Words read correctly per minute on an unpracticed passage.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given an unread 200-word passage from the current class novel, the student will read the passage aloud for 1 minute independently at a rate of at least 120 words correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 92 words correct per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Oral reading fluency (WCPM) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives oral reading fluency (WCPM) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Fluency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
