Related services
Last updated
Related services are supports, such as speech therapy, transportation or counseling, that a student needs to benefit from special education.
Topic: Services, placement and staff
In plain terms
IDEA lists many related services, including speech-language pathology, audiology, interpreting, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, counseling, orientation and mobility, school health and nursing services, social work, parent counseling and training, and transportation. The list is not complete. Medical services are included only for diagnosis or evaluation, and surgically implanted devices are not covered.
How it shows up in an IEP
The IEP lists each related service with its minutes, frequency and setting. Providers usually write or support goals in their area, and the best goals are shared with the teacher so the skill is practiced throughout the day.
Example
A student's IEP includes 30 minutes a week of occupational therapy for handwriting, 60 minutes a month of counseling, and special transportation with a bus aide.
The rule
Federal reference: 34 CFR §300.34.
