Match tactile shapes and dot patterns
When to use this goal
For children building the tactile discrimination that braille reading needs. Present levels decide where to start: real objects, then raised shapes, then braille cells that differ by several dots, then by one dot.
- Baseline
- Probe 10 rows at each level (shapes, cells that differ by three or more dots, cells that differ by one dot) and start instruction at the first level below 80%. Record whether the child scans the whole row or stops at the first item.
- Tips
- Score one item per row. Teach a searching pattern: touch every item left to right before choosing. Mix target positions so guessing the first or last item does not work.
- Limits
- Discrimination on worksheets is a step toward reading, not reading itself. Tactile sensitivity can vary with temperature, fatigue, or neuropathy; note the conditions of each probe.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a row of 4 raised shapes or braille cells, with one that matches a target at the left of the row, the student will find and touch the item in the row that matches the target independently with at least 85% accuracy on matching and odd-one-out rows, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Braille Literacy.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
