Build braille reading rate on contracted passages

3-5Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For readers of contracted braille who read accurately but slowly. Present levels from unpracticed timed readings decide the target, compared with the student's own growth rather than print norms.

Baseline
Use the median of three unpracticed passages. Mark errors by type (contraction misread, word skipped, line lost) so instruction can target the cause of slow reading.
Tips
Repeated readings, timed rereading of familiar text, and work on hand movements usually raise rate. Keep passages unpracticed for the probe itself.
Limits
Rate does not measure comprehension; pair it with a question or retell goal. Rates vary with passage difficulty, so use passages from one leveled set.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given an unpracticed contracted braille passage at the student's instructional level, the student will read the passage aloud for one minute independently at a rate of at least 50 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 30 words read correctly per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Braille Literacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
