When to use this sheet
- Discrete, countable behaviors with a clear start and end (hand raises, initiations, coping-strategy use)
- Timed fluency probes reported as correct per minute
- Goals to increase or decrease how often something happens
How to use it
- Write an operational definition of the behavior so different observers count the same thing.
- Keep the observation period the same length. If it varies, compare rate, not raw counts.
- Use tally marks during observation and total them afterward.
Questions
When is frequency the wrong measure?
Frequency is a poor fit for behaviors that last a long or variable time, such as staying engaged. Use duration for those. It's also a poor fit when opportunities vary a lot from day to day. Use opportunities instead.
