Braille reading rate in content-area text
When to use this goal
For older braille readers who need to keep up with textbook reading in science and social studies. Present levels from timed readings of class texts decide the target; the goal is speed for real course reading.
- Baseline
- Use three unpracticed textbook passages and compare paper braille with the braille display, since rates often differ. Record the median for the medium the student uses most.
- Tips
- A two-minute probe smooths out the effect of a single difficult word. Use the rate to plan accommodations such as extended time and audio for long readings.
- Limits
- Rate does not measure comprehension of content text. Rates on paper and on a display are not comparable; keep the medium the same across probes.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given an unpracticed passage from a grade-level science or social studies textbook in contracted braille, read for 2 minutes (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will read the passage aloud for two minutes independently at a rate of at least 65 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 45 words read correctly per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Braille Literacy.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
