Pass through doorways with a guide
When to use this goal
For students who use the basic guide grip and need the guide techniques for narrow passages and doorways. Present levels in the basic grip decide fit.
- Baseline
- Observe three guided walks with a doorway and a narrow space and mark each step. Teach the guide the signal at the same time.
- Tips
- Train regular guides, including peers, to use the same signals. These skills make guided travel faster and less tiring in crowded schools.
- Limits
- Guide skill varies; score only the student's steps. The goal does not replace the O&M specialist's judgment about when the student is ready for a harder route or less supervision.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when walking with a guide through a doorway, a crowded aisle, or between desks, the student will move behind the guide in single file when the guide signals a narrow space and open or close the door on their side, performing all 5 steps independently, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected during each O&M lesson.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 5 of 5).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
