Complete sentences with unit science words
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who can repeat a science unit's words but cannot use them in context, so answers in class stay vague. Present levels in reading the sentences (or access to read-aloud) decide whether the probe is printed or spoken.
- Baseline
- Build the first probe from the last unit's words so the baseline reflects carry-over, then use the current unit's words for weekly probes. Two extra words in the bank keep the last items from being solved by elimination.
- Tips
- Write the probe sentences in plain language so the only hard word is the science word. Co-plan with the science teacher to get the unit word list early. The format stays the same while the words change each unit.
- Limits
- Cloze accuracy shows recognition in context, not use in the student's own writing or speech. Units differ in how abstract the words are, so a dip at a new unit is expected.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 cloze sentences about the current science unit and a word bank of 12 unit words, the student will write or select the unit word that completes each sentence independently with at least 80% accuracy on cloze sentences, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
