Record lab measurements in a data table
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who take measurements in a lab but write them in the wrong row, leave out units, or record nothing until the end. Present levels in reading a simple table decide fit.
- Baseline
- Collect data tables from two or three labs and score each cell: correct row and column, value matches the measurement, unit included. Check the value against an adult's or partner's reading so the score reflects recording, not measuring.
- Tips
- Recording at the time of measurement is the habit to build; tables filled from memory at the end are not scored as correct. Keep a pencil and the table on a clipboard at the station.
- Limits
- Measures recording, not the accuracy of the measurement itself; pair with a measurement-tool template if both are needs. Labs vary in how many entries they produce.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a science investigation with a pre-made data table of at least 6 cells and labeled rows and columns, the student will write each measurement in the correct cell of the data table with its unit at the time it is taken independently with at least 85% accuracy on data table entries, on 3 of 4 consecutive labs, as measured by work-sample analysis collected at each lab.
Baseline: 45% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
