Read a thermometer, ruler or graduated cylinder
When to use this goal
For students who use measuring tools in labs but read them at the wrong mark, skip the unit, or read a graduated cylinder from the top of the curve. Present levels in reading a number line with unlabeled tick marks decide fit.
- Baseline
- Probe each tool separately at baseline and record errors by type: wrong scale interval, missing unit, reading the wrong end of the ruler, or reading the cylinder at the edge. Each error type has a different fix.
- Tips
- Use the tools from the student's science classroom so skills transfer to labs. Count only answers with the correct unit. Students with fine motor or vision needs may need tools with larger marks or a talking thermometer; note the tool in the condition.
- Limits
- Set-up readings are easier than measuring during a busy lab. The goal does not cover estimating between marks or converting units.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 set-up readings on real tools (a thermometer, a metric ruler and a graduated cylinder) at a lab station, the student will read each tool to the nearest marked unit and write the value with its metric unit independently with at least 80% accuracy on tool readings, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
