Find answers in science captions and diagrams

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read the body text of a science textbook but skip captions, diagrams and labels, so they miss answers that are only shown in those features. Present levels in reading the text, or access to text-to-speech, decide fit.

Baseline
Score both the answer and the marked source; a right answer with no source may come from prior knowledge. Note whether the student looks at features without being reminded.
Tips
Build probes from the current science textbook so the skill is used in real reading. The reading comprehension template on headings and the index (rd-comp) covers navigation; this one covers visual information.
Limits
The probe uses questions written to need text features; class texts may not always work that way. The goal does not cover reading graphs, which has its own template (ca-sci-013).

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID ca-sci-018.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a two-page science textbook section with captions, a diagram and a labeled photo, and 6 questions answered only by those features, the student will answer each question and mark the caption, diagram or label where the answer was found independently with at least 83% accuracy on text feature questions, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 33% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
