Take two-column notes from a science textbook section
When to use this goal
For students who highlight everything or copy whole sentences when asked to take notes from a science text, so the notes do not help them study. Present levels in finding the main idea of a paragraph decide fit.
- Baseline
- Collect notes the student took on two sections without a template and score them with the rubric. Also note the time taken; very slow note-taking may need a partial template.
- Tips
- Two-column notes double as a study tool: the student covers the right column and quizzes themselves. Teach with the science textbook the student uses daily.
- Limits
- The rubric scores the notes, not whether the student uses them to study. Texts without clear headings make the task much harder.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a science textbook section of 2 to 3 pages with headings and a two-column notes page, the student will write each heading as a question in the left column and short answers with key terms and details in the right column independently, earning a score of at least 7 out of 9 on a 3-row science notes rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored note sets, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 3 out of 9 rubric points.

- Score each sample with a 3-row science notes rubric scored 0 to 3 per row. Attach or reference the rubric's score descriptors.
- Use the same prompt type and conditions for each scored sample.
- If two people score, check agreement on a few samples before relying on the data.
