Move on a grid map with cardinal directions
When to use this goal
For primary students who say left and right but cannot use north, south, east and west on a map. Present levels in counting spaces and in reading the compass rose letters decide fit.
- Baseline
- Score each card for direction and number of squares. Many students confuse east and west; record which directions are missed to choose a memory aid.
- Tips
- A floor grid turns this into a movement activity. Once the student meets the goal, move to a real neighborhood map. The skill supports later work with map grids and coordinates.
- Limits
- Grid maps are simpler than real maps with roads. The goal does not include intermediate directions such as northeast.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a grid map with a compass rose, a starting square and 8 direction cards (such as go 2 squares north), the student will move a marker or walk from the starting square following each direction card and name the place reached independently with at least 88% accuracy on direction cards, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 38% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
