Answer questions with a map key

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who look at a map's pictures but do not use the key to find what symbols mean, so they cannot answer map questions in class. Present levels in matching symbols to pictures decide fit.

Baseline
Use a map the student has not seen and include questions of two kinds: what is at a place, and where is a kind of place. Record whether the student checks the key without being told.
Tips
Change the map each probe and keep the question types. Maps from the current social studies unit make the skill count in class. Tactile maps with a braille key work for students who read braille.
Limits
Ten questions is a short probe. The goal does not cover scale, grids or directions, which have their own templates.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a community or state map with a key of 6 to 8 symbols and 10 questions, the student will answer each question by finding the symbol in the key and locating it on the map independently with at least 80% accuracy on map key questions, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
