Place dated events on a timeline
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who place events in order by guess or by the order they were taught, not by date. Present levels in comparing and ordering four-digit numbers decide fit.
- Baseline
- Score a card correct if it is in the right decade and in the right order with its neighbors. Students who struggle to compare years like 1776 and 1767 need number work alongside.
- Tips
- Use events from the current unit so the timeline doubles as a study tool. The format stays the same while the content changes. Keep a class timeline on the wall that the student adds to.
- Limits
- Ordering by year does not show the student can explain how events are connected; see the cause and effect template. Eight cards is a short probe.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a timeline marked by decades and 8 event cards with years from the current unit, the student will place each event card at the correct spot on the timeline and name which event came first and last independently with at least 88% accuracy on timeline placements, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 38% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
