Locate continents and oceans on a globe
When to use this goal
For elementary students who confuse continents and countries or cannot find large landmasses and oceans on a globe or world map. Present levels in naming or pointing to taught words decide whether to use pointing or naming.
- Baseline
- Probe with both a globe and a flat map; some students find a globe harder because of rotation. Record which names are missed and whether the student starts with the continent they live on.
- Tips
- Raised-relief globes give students with vision needs a way to locate by touch. Tie locations to the student's family, news stories or class units so the names matter.
- Limits
- Locating names is basic geography and does not show map reasoning. Twelve items is a short probe; trends over weeks are more useful than one score.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a globe or unlabeled world map and the names of the 7 continents and 5 oceans spoken one at a time, the student will point to or label each continent and ocean independently with at least 83% accuracy on continent and ocean locations, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 33% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
