Locate places by latitude and longitude

6-8, 9-12Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students who mix up latitude and longitude lines or read coordinates in the wrong order. Present levels in plotting points on a coordinate grid decide fit.

Baseline
Accept answers within the nearest labeled line. Record whether errors come from order (longitude first), hemisphere letters, or reading between lines.
Tips
Link to the math coordinate grid so the student sees the same idea. Digital globes that show coordinates let students check their own answers.
Limits
Coordinates to the nearest line are a simplification. The goal does not include time zones or climate patterns tied to latitude.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a world or regional map with labeled latitude and longitude lines every 10 or 20 degrees and 8 coordinate pairs, the student will find the place at each coordinate pair and write its name independently with at least 75% accuracy on coordinate items, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 25% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
