Build a timeline with an even scale
When to use this goal
For middle school students who place events in order but space them evenly no matter the years between, so the timeline hides gaps and clusters. Present levels in placing dated events on a premade timeline show readiness.
- Baseline
- Score two timelines the student builds. Even interval marking is the step most often missed; check with a ruler.
- Tips
- Digital timeline tools space events automatically; if used, score the steps the student still controls and note the tool. The skill links to math scale and number lines.
- Limits
- The checklist scores the construction, not whether the student can explain the period. Units with very long or very short spans make scales harder.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 6 to 8 events with dates from the current unit, a blank strip and a ruler, the student will build a timeline of the events with an even scale and labels, performing at least 6 of 7 steps independently, across 3 consecutive timeline tasks, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 2 of 7 steps independently.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 6 of 7).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
