Stay engaged in a lecture using a note-taking frame

When to use this goal

For secondary students whose present levels show attention fades within minutes of a lecture or lesson with slides. The note-taking frame should match the lesson format. Present levels decide the starting minutes.

Baseline
Observe at least five lectures and time the longest continuous engaged episode. Collect the note frames afterward; blank sections show where attention ended. Ask the teacher whether the student's attention breaks match the lesson's harder sections.
Tips
Engaged means writing in the frame, oriented toward the speaker or slides, or responding; fidgeting and doodling in the margins while writing notes still count. The episode ends after more than 15 seconds of unrelated activity (phone, side conversation, head down). Collect the frame as a second data source.
Limits
Lectures vary in pace and interest; log the topic and format. Note-taking frames are a support that may stay as an accommodation. Duration does not show understanding.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Criterion

How long a behavior lasts, from a defined start to a defined end.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute lecture segment with a note-taking frame, the student will attend to the lecture by writing in the note frame as each section is presented and responding when called on independently for at least 15 minutes, in 4 of 5 consecutive observed lectures, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 5 minutes.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
