Keep an estimate-versus-actual homework log
When to use this goal
For students who think homework takes 10 minutes when it takes 45, or the reverse, and plan evenings around wrong guesses. Present levels, not grade, decide whether the log is paper or digital.
- Baseline
- Ask the student to estimate three homework tasks and time them. The size of the gap sets the purpose. Then score the log routine for a week.
- Tips
- The log is the data; check it weekly. Over time, look at whether the differences shrink, a useful second measure. Phones and apps can log time automatically.
- Limits
- Self-reported times can be rough, and students may round. Does not measure homework completion or quality; pair with an assignment completion goal when work is also missing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a homework session at home or in study hall, using a homework time log, the student will complete the estimate-versus-actual log routine for each homework task, performing at least 4 of 5 steps independently, on 4 of 5 consecutive homework nights, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected weekly, from the log.
Baseline: 1 of 5 steps independently.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Task-analysis steps fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Task-analysis checklist gives task-analysis steps data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Time Management.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 4 of 5).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
