Add and subtract integers on a timed probe

6-8, 9-12Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who add and subtract integers correctly but slowly, which slows algebra work. Present levels in untimed integer accuracy decide readiness; accuracy above 80% should come first.

Baseline
Use three probes and the median. A problem is correct only with the right sign; record sign errors as a separate tally.
Tips
Score problems correct rather than digits so sign errors count. Fade the number line when the rate is steady.
Limits
Speed matters less than accuracy for many students; use this goal only when slow integer work is a real barrier.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute probe of mixed integer addition and subtraction problems from -12 to 12 (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will write the answer to each problem with the correct sign independently at a rate of at least 15 problems correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 6 problems correct per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
