Read and construct histograms, stem-and-leaf plots and box plots

6-8, 9-12Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

Fits middle and high school students who meet these displays in math and science and treat a histogram like a bar graph or cannot read a box plot. Present levels in line plots and in median and range decide the starting display.

Baseline
Score each display type separately; stem-and-leaf is usually easiest, box plots hardest. For histograms, the question "how many values are exactly 12?" tests whether the student knows intervals hide individual values.
Tips
Build each display from the same data set so the student sees what each one shows and hides. Constructing a box plot depends on the mean-median-mode template; sequence them.
Limits
Construction items are long and few per probe. Does not include comparing distributions in depth or standard deviation.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a histogram, stem-and-leaf plot or box plot and 5 questions about the data it shows, the student will answer each question using the display independently with at least 80% accuracy on display questions and constructions, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Patterns, Data & Graphs.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
