When to use this goal

For students who can compute mean, median and range but cannot use them to describe or compare data in words. Present levels in finding mean, median, mode and range decide readiness.

Baseline
Score two descriptions. Many students list measures without saying what they mean.
Tips
Real data from the class or sports make the task meaningful.
Limits
Rubric scores depend on the data set; keep sets similar.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a dot plot or table of 10 to 20 values from a real context, such as minutes of exercise or test scores, the student will write a description, with numbers, that names a typical value, the spread and any unusual values independently, earning a score of at least 5 out of 6 on a 3-row data description rubric (0 to 2 points per row), on 3 of 4 consecutive scored samples, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 2 out of 6 rubric points.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rubric score fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Patterns, Data & Graphs.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
