Find a fraction of a group of objects
When to use this goal
For students who name fractions of shapes but cannot find half of 12 counters, which blocks later work with fraction word problems. Present levels in equal sharing (division concept) decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Watch for the common error of making the number of groups equal to the numerator (making 2 groups for 2/3). Score unit fractions and non-unit fractions separately so the goal can start with the easier type.
- Tips
- Use sets that divide evenly. Say the denominator as the number of groups and the numerator as how many groups to take; that language carries into multiplication of fractions later.
- Limits
- Does not measure fractions of a region or on a number line. Picture items allow counting; real objects require the student to form the groups.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 problems that ask for 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 of a set of up to 24 objects or pictures, the student will split the set into the number of equal groups named by the denominator and state how many are in one group independently with at least 85% accuracy on fraction-of-a-set problems, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fractions.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
