Show one fraction three ways

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who can shade a fraction of a rectangle but cannot show the same fraction as a set or on a number line, so their idea of a fraction is tied to one picture. Present levels in naming fractions from area models decide readiness.

Baseline
Score each model separately. Most students do well on area and poorly on the number line, where they count tick marks instead of spaces; record that error.
Tips
Working across models is what makes later work with fractions on rulers, in recipes and in data make sense. Use fractions equal to and greater than 1 in a later objective.
Limits
Does not measure operations with fractions.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8, a blank rectangle, a set of counters and a number line for each, the student will shade the area model, mark the set, and place the point on the number line for each fraction independently with at least 85% accuracy on fraction models, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fractions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
