Solve and explain a fraction word problem

3-5, 6-8Rubric scoreTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who compute fractions but cannot set up or explain a word problem, which most tests and grade-level tasks ask for. Present levels in fraction operations and in written or oral explanation decide readiness.

Baseline
Score two or three problems with the rubric and check agreement with a second scorer on one. The model row is usually lowest at baseline.
Tips
Accept spoken explanations recorded by an adult. Use contexts from the class unit (recipes, measurement, time).
Limits
Rubric scores vary with problem difficulty; keep problems comparable.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a one- or two-step fraction word problem with text read aloud on request, the student will draw a model, write an equation, solve, and explain the answer in words independently, earning a score of at least 7 out of 8 on a 4-row fraction problem rubric (0 to 2 points per row), on 3 of 4 consecutive scored samples, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 3 out of 8 rubric points.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rubric score fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fractions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
