Measure length with a ruler to the nearest unit or fraction
When to use this goal
For students who place the ruler wrong (starting at 1 or at the end of the ruler) or who cannot read fractional marks. Present levels in fractions on a number line decide whether to include half- and quarter-inch marks.
- Baseline
- Watch the placement and record the error type: starting at 1, starting at the ruler's edge, reading the wrong side (inches versus centimeters), or misreading fractional marks. Decide the tolerance for "nearest" and keep it fixed.
- Tips
- Objects longer than the ruler add a second skill (marking and re-placing); include them only if that is taught. For vocational goals, a tape measure is a separate tool worth adding later.
- Limits
- Ruler reading is partly fine motor and vision; students with those needs may need a larger ruler or a digital tool. Does not include area, perimeter or conversions.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 objects or line segments and a ruler, with the direction to measure to the nearest inch or centimeter, the student will line up the zero mark with one end and write the length with the correct unit independently with at least 85% accuracy on measurements, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Measurement, Time & Money.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
