Pick the bigger number on a timed probe
When to use this goal
For students who name numerals but are slow or unsure about which of two numbers is greater, a strong early sign of later math difficulty. Present levels in numeral naming to 20 decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Use three probes and take the median. Record skipped boxes and pairs where the student chose the numeral that looks bigger or comes first. Count self-corrections within 3 seconds as correct.
- Tips
- Use a published or teacher-made probe set with the same format each week. The oral version is easiest to score; the circle version can be given to a small group.
- Limits
- Rates on 0 to 20 and 0 to 100 probes are not comparable; change the range only at a new goal. Does not ask the student to explain how they compared.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of boxes, each with two numerals from 0 to 20, the student will say or point to the bigger number in each box independently at a rate of at least 28 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 10 correct responses per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Number Sense.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
