Estimate positions on a number line to 1,000

When to use this goal

For students who place numbers to 100 well but have a weak sense of the size of numbers to 1,000 (placing 150 near the middle). Present levels in reading three-digit numbers and in 0-to-100 number line work decide readiness.

Baseline
Use a line of the same length every time and a clear overlay with tick marks every 50 to score quickly. Include small numbers (40, 120) where crowded-together placements show up.
Tips
Number line estimation is closely linked to later math achievement. The landmark behavior shows strategy and makes errors easy to talk about.
Limits
Accuracy within 50 is a scoring rule set by the team; write the rule on the probe. Does not measure computation.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 numbers from 0 to 1,000 and an empty number line marked only at 0 and 1,000, the student will mark the position of each number on the line independently with at least 80% accuracy on placements within 50 of the exact position, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Number Sense.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
