Run a shuttle run with quick turns
When to use this goal
For students who run in a straight line but slow down a lot, stumble or circle wide when they must stop and turn, which keeps them out of tag games and team sports. Timed shuttle runs in PE, not grade, decide fit. Students with medical limits on running need clearance first.
- Baseline
- Time three runs on separate days and watch the turns: does the student slow early, plant a foot, or circle around? Compare with peers only as a reference, not a target. Note whether a touch of the line is missed, since a skipped touch makes a fast time meaningless.
- Tips
- Teach the turn: shorter steps before the line, a low body and a push off the outside foot. Use the same course length and surface for every probe. Celebrate the student's own best time rather than ranking against the class.
- Limits
- Measures speed over a short course, not endurance or safety in games. Footwear and floor surface change times. Not suited to students who use a walker or wheelchair; adapt the course with the PT for those students.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during PE, on a shuttle run course with two lines 20 feet apart and a block to carry at each turn, the student will complete four lengths of the shuttle run, touching each line with a hand or foot and turning to run back independently within 22 seconds, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by duration recording collected weekly during PE.
Baseline: 30 seconds.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at or below the target (22 seconds).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
