Propel a manual wheelchair to lunch on time

When to use this goal

For students who push their own manual wheelchair but reach lunch, specials or the bus late or tired because of slow strokes, rest stops or stops to steer around people. A timed run of the real route, not grade or age, decides whether this target fits.

Baseline
Time the real route on three days at the real passing time, starting when the wheels first move and stopping at the cafeteria door. Note each stop, its cause (rest, steering, crowd, door) and every adult push; the pattern tells the PT whether endurance, stroke technique or the route itself is the main barrier.
Tips
Set the target from the passing time the school allows, not from how fast peers walk. When the route is long, an early release or a shorter route can give more access than a faster push, and the team can use both. The PT checks stroke technique (long, smooth pushes) so speed does not come at the cost of the shoulders.
Limits
Time alone does not show shoulder strain or late-day fatigue; ask the student and watch afternoon classes. A changed route (construction, a new classroom) breaks the data series and needs a new baseline. Whether a power chair would give more access is a team decision, not a goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the passing time before lunch, on the route from the classroom to the cafeteria, the student will propel the manual wheelchair the full route, steering around people and objects with no adult pushes or prompts within 5 minutes, on 4 of 5 timed routes, as measured by duration recording collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 9 minutes.

Measurability check10 of 11 met · 1 to review
  • Review: Unit fits the behavior. Duration measures how long something lasts. The behavior should describe an ongoing activity.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Mobility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
