Propel a wheelchair continuously for a set number of minutes
When to use this goal
For students who use a manual wheelchair and who stop frequently or are pushed by an adult during fitness activities and long school routes. Use a timed continuous propulsion trial during baseline, with the PT confirming safe technique to decide the starting time.
- Baseline
- Time continuous propulsion from the start to the first stop on three days and use the median. The PT should check push technique and shoulder comfort before setting a target; endurance built with poor technique causes injury. Note the surface, since carpet and outdoor tracks are much harder than a gym floor.
- Tips
- This is the wheelchair version of the walking endurance goal and should be offered to every manual chair user in PE. Pair with the school route goal in gross motor if long routes are the concern. Gloves protect the hands and are a reasonable permanent support.
- Limits
- Surface changes everything; keep it constant for data. Power chair users do not fit this goal. Shoulder pain is a reason to stop and consult the PT, not to push through.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (10 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
