Place digits in the right place value columns

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who understand place value when talking but write digits in the wrong column of a place value chart or decimal grid, so answers shift by a place. Fit depends on an error analysis, not grade.

Baseline
Score two charts and record shift errors by direction. Ask the student to read a number aloud from the chart; if they read it right but write it wrong, the need is visual-motor.
Tips
Color-coded columns fade well to labels only. Pair with mt-vm-016 for column alignment in computation.
Limits
Does not measure place value understanding. Chart formats vary; keep one format for probes.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a place value chart with labeled columns and 8 numbers to enter, the student will write each digit in its labeled column, lining up the ones digit with the ones column independently with at least 90% accuracy on numbers entered with every digit in the right column, on 3 consecutive weekly work samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Visual-Motor & Visual-Perceptual Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
