Write an objective summary of an article

6-8, 9-12Rubric scoreTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students whose summaries of informational articles include their opinions, minor details, or copied sentences. An objective summary names the central idea and key supporting points only. Present levels decide the text level.

Baseline
Score two or three summaries. Note whether the central idea or objectivity is the bigger gap.
Tips
Accept typed or dictated summaries if writing is a barrier. Builds on the one-sentence summary template.
Limits
Summaries reflect writing skills; separate them if needed.
