Find the claim and reasons in an argument
When to use this goal
For middle school students who read opinion pieces as stories or fact lists and cannot pick out what the writer wants the reader to believe and why. Present levels decide the text level.
- Baseline

- Tips
- Builds toward evaluating evidence and writing arguments.
- Limits

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
