Use a textbook reading routine for a section
When to use this goal
For middle school students who read textbook sections start to finish without previewing, and then cannot answer section questions. A short routine organizes the reading. Present levels decide whether the text is read or heard.
- Baseline
- Observe one full section. Mark each step independent, prompted, or skipped. The preview step is often skipped.
- Tips
- Teach with the student's actual textbook. The routine can be used with text-to-speech.
- Limits
- Completing the routine does not guarantee comprehension; check the section answers too.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 5 of 5).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
