Synthesize two sources to answer a research question
When to use this goal
For high school students who report on sources one at a time and cannot combine them to answer a question. Synthesis is the step beyond comparing. Present levels decide the text level.
- Baseline
- Use source pairs that each add something. Note whether the student summarizes each source separately.
- Tips
- Supports research papers and test tasks that ask for two sources.
- Limits
- Writing demands are high; accept oral or dictated responses.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a research question and two informational sources at the student's instructional level, the student will answer the question using information from both sources and show how they connect independently, earning a score of at least 7 out of 9 on a 3-row synthesis rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored responses, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.

Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Comprehension.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
