Sum up a current event and its effects
When to use this goal
For high school students who can read a news article near their level but struggle to pull out the main event and explain how it affects people. Present levels, not grade, decide whether the article is read independently, aloud, or in an adapted version.
- Baseline
- Score two or three summaries of articles of similar length. Let the student choose a spoken or written response and keep that mode steady while collecting data.
- Tips
- Fits civics, government, and advisory classes that run weekly current events. Offer two or three articles on topics the student cares about, and keep the news source consistent.
- Limits
- Background knowledge strongly affects scores on news topics. The rubric does not judge the student's opinion about the event; add an argument goal if that is the target.
