Read words with soft c, soft g, and silent letters

When to use this goal

For students whose basic patterns are secure but who read city with a hard c or knee with a /k/, which an inventory of these specific patterns will show. Usually a later phonics goal; base the choice on the inventory.

Baseline
Probe the three groups (soft c and g, silent letters, mixed) separately. Keep a tally by pattern; gn and mb are rarer and often weaker. Use unfamiliar words, since many common silent-letter words (know, write) are already memorized.
Tips
Teach the soft-c and soft-g rule explicitly (c and g are soft before e, i, and y) and the silent pairs as spelling patterns tied to word history. The mixed list is the annual step. Pair with a spelling goal for the same patterns.
Limits
The soft-g rule has common exceptions (get, give, girl); exclude them from probes and teach them as irregular. Silent-letter words are relatively rare in text, so weigh this goal against higher-impact patterns. Does not measure rate.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a list of 20 unfamiliar words mixing soft c and g, hard c and g, and silent-letter patterns, the student will read each word aloud independently with at least 90% accuracy on target-pattern words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
