Nonsense words with blends and digraphs

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read real words with blends and digraphs partly from memory and whose decoding needs checking on words they could not have memorized. Present levels should show taught blends and digraphs.

Baseline
Tally errors by part: blend, digraph, vowel. Watch for the student turning nonsense words into real ones, a sign of guessing. Explain that the words are made up so the student is not confused.
Tips
Use alongside real-word lists. The core nonsense word template uses VC and CVC; this one adds blends and digraphs.
Limits
Some students find nonsense words frustrating; keep sessions short. Scores are not norm-referenced.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID rd-dec-024.

Percent of attempted items answered correctly.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Brief, standardized probes given at regular intervals and scored the same way each time.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 printed one-syllable nonsense words with taught blends and digraphs (such as shref, blitch, cromp), the student will read each word aloud as a whole word independently with at least 85% accuracy on nonsense words read correctly, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
