Two-syllable words with a silent-e syllable

3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read one-syllable silent-e words but miss the pattern in the second syllable of longer words (reptile, compete, invite, explode). Present levels should show closed syllables are solid.

Baseline
Score the whole word correct only with both syllables right. Note whether the student divides correctly; division errors and vowel errors need different teaching.
Tips
Part of a syllable-type sequence: closed, open, silent-e, vowel team, r-controlled, consonant-le.
Limits
Some words have an unstressed silent-e syllable with a changed vowel (promise); avoid them in probes.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 15 printed two-syllable words with a closed syllable followed by a silent-e syllable, the student will divide each word into syllables and read it aloud with the long vowel in the silent-e syllable independently with at least 90% accuracy on two-syllable silent-e words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
