Three-letter blends such as str and spl

3-5, K-2Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who read two-letter blends but drop a sound in three-letter blends (string read as sting, splash read as slash). Present levels decide readiness.

Baseline
Include near pairs (strap and trap). Check whether the student hears all three sounds orally; if not, add phonological work.
Tips
Pairs with the blend segmentation template in phonological awareness.
Limits
Speech sound needs can affect production; consult the SLP.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 printed one-syllable words with scr, spl, spr, str, squ, or thr, the student will read each word aloud with all three blend sounds independently with at least 90% accuracy on three-letter blend words, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
