Decode words in a work manual

9-12Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students in vocational or work-based programs who meet unfamiliar words in training materials (equipment, sanitize, procedure, protective) and need to read them, not just guess. Present levels decide the material level.

Baseline
Use real materials from the student's program. Mark words that are decodable with taught patterns.
Tips
Text-to-speech remains an option at work; this goal builds independent reading. Safety information should never depend on this goal alone.
Limits
Workplace materials vary; collect a set for consistent probes.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Percent of attempted items answered correctly.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Brief, standardized probes given at regular intervals and scored the same way each time.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a section of a workplace training manual or safety sheet with 10 marked unfamiliar words, the student will read each marked word aloud using a decoding strategy independently with at least 85% accuracy on unfamiliar workplace words decoded correctly, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
