Career and technical terms on a timed list

9-12Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students in career and technical courses (auto, health science, culinary, construction) whose course reading is full of long technical terms they cannot yet decode quickly (thermometer, carburetor, measurement, ingredients). Present levels should show accurate untimed decoding of the terms with a strategy.

Baseline
Build the list with the course teacher. Take the median of three shuffled lists.
Tips
Ties decoding practice to a course the student chose. Term meanings belong in a vocabulary goal.
Limits
Course lists change with units; keep a core list for comparison.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute list of terms from the student's career and technical course in random order, the student will read the terms aloud across the rows independently at a rate of at least 25 words read correctly per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 10 words read correctly per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonics & Decoding.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
