Picture book read-aloud to younger students
When to use this goal
For upper-elementary students who read accurately when practiced but read too quietly, too fast, or without expression when others are listening. The book should be one the student can read with high accuracy after practice, chosen from present levels rather than grade.
- Baseline
- Score two read-alouds to real listeners, since practice alone with an adult gives a different picture. Note accuracy separately; if the student misreads more than a few words, choose an easier book before scoring prosody.
- Tips
- Cross-age reading gives older students who read below grade level a real, respectful reason to reread easier text many times. Let the student choose the book from a set at the right level.
- Limits
- Practiced reading to an audience does not show cold-read fluency. Listener behavior affects the score; note the group size and setting each time.
