Science lab procedure read aloud accurately
When to use this goal
For middle school students who need to read numbered procedures (lab steps, technology directions) where one misread word or number leads to a mistake. Present levels should show the student reads general text at a workable level.
- Baseline
- Mark errors on a copy and flag errors in quantities, units (mL, cm, degrees), and safety words, which matter most. Note whether errors cluster on science vocabulary that could be preteaching targets.
- Tips
- Coordinate with the science teacher so the procedure is available ahead of the lab. A follow-up comprehension goal can check that the student carries out the steps in order.
- Limits
- Reading the procedure aloud accurately does not show the student follows it. Units and symbols are read in different ways; agree on acceptable readings before scoring.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given an unpracticed 8- to 12-step science lab procedure written at the student's instructional level, the student will read each numbered step aloud, including quantities, units, and safety words independently with at least 97% accuracy on words, numbers, and units read in the procedure, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 86% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Fluency.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
