Name letters on a 1-minute timed probe
When to use this goal
For students who name most letters accurately but slowly, as shown by an untimed inventory above about 80 percent and a timed probe well below screening benchmarks. If accuracy is still low, use an accuracy goal first. Base the choice on the two data points.
- Baseline
- Give three probes with different letter orders on separate days and use the median. Record errors and skipped letters, not just the count, so you can tell slow retrieval from gaps. Use the same probe format (font, letters per row, rows per page) every time.
- Tips
- Letter naming fluency is a common kindergarten screening measure, so this goal lines up with school-wide data. Build speed with brief daily practice on known letters rather than drilling the whole alphabet. Add a letter-sound goal alongside; naming speed alone does not teach reading.
- Limits
- Rate rewards speed, and some students start skipping or guessing when timed; score accuracy alongside and stop timing if accuracy drops below about 90 percent. Letter naming fluency predicts reading risk but is not itself a reading skill. Students with motor or visual tracking differences may be slowed by scanning rather than retrieval.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of mixed uppercase and lowercase letters printed in random order, the student will say the name of each letter in order, moving left to right across each row independently at a rate of at least 40 letters correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 14 letters correct per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
