Say the short vowel sound for a, e, i, o, u

When to use this goal

For students who know most consonant sounds but confuse or omit short vowels, which is the most common sticking point before CVC reading. Base the choice on a vowel-only inventory. Older students with persistent CVC errors often need this goal too.

Baseline
Use 20 trials (each vowel 4 times) so one error is 5 points. Chart which vowels are confused with which; e and i are the usual pair. Note whether the student gives the letter name, the long sound, or a different short sound, because each needs a different correction.
Tips
Teach vowels that sound different from each other first (a and o), then add i, u, and finally e. Keep a keyword picture tied to each vowel and use the same one every time. Begin CVC blending as soon as two vowels and a few consonants are known.
Limits
Short vowel sounds vary by regional accent; score the sound the student hears in the classroom. Vowels in isolation are harder for some students than vowels inside a word, so the CVC-word condition may score higher. Does not measure vowel reading inside words.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given the 5 lowercase vowel letter cards shown one at a time in random order, each shown 4 times, the student will say the short sound for each vowel independently with at least 90% accuracy on vowel sound trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Letter Names & Sounds.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
