Write the letter when its name is dictated
When to use this goal
For students who name letters but cannot produce the form from memory when asked, a gap that slows spelling and writing. Base the choice on a dictation check. If the barrier is pencil control rather than retrieval, a handwriting goal fits better.
- Baseline
- Dictate all 26 lowercase letters twice and keep the papers. Score a letter correct if it is recognizable and not reversed; decide in advance how to score rotations and reversals, and write the rule on the data sheet. Compare with the student's letter-naming data: letters not named will not be written from dictation.
- Tips
- The keyboard condition separates letter retrieval from handwriting for students with motor needs. Coordinate with the occupational therapist if formation itself is a need. Use the written letters as a permanent product for progress reports.
- Limits
- Scoring legibility is subjective at the margins; use a second scorer for a few samples. This goal measures retrieval of the form from the name, not the sound; a sound-dictation goal is separate. Reversals are common in early writers and should be tracked rather than treated as a failure on their own.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given the dictated names of 20 lowercase letters, one at a time, and lined paper, the student will write the letter named independently with at least 90% accuracy on dictated letters, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
