Alphabetize word cards by first letter
When to use this goal
For students who know alphabetical order but cannot apply it to words, which blocks dictionary, glossary, index, and file-system use. Base the choice on a word-sorting check; many older students with reading needs still require this functional skill.
- Baseline
- Score each word as in or out of its correct position. Give three sets of 8 words with different first letters and watch whether the student uses the alphabet strip, recites from a, or looks at the second letter when the first matches. Confirm letter sequence knowledge first.
- Tips
- The same-first-letter condition moves the student to the second letter, which is what glossaries require. Use real tasks for practice: lining up by last name, filing folders, finding a word in a picture dictionary. Pair with the reference-tool goal in the vocabulary skill.
- Limits
- Position scoring punishes one early mistake twice (the misplaced word and the one it displaced); describe your scoring rule on the data sheet. Alphabetizing is a tool skill, not a reading comprehension skill. Digital search has reduced its everyday importance, so weigh it against the student's actual needs.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 8 word cards that all begin with different letters, the student will arrange the words in alphabetical order independently with at least 90% accuracy on words placed in the correct position, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
